June 28, 2009 – Athens to Syros
It was a very early start today – 6pm departure from the hotel to the port and then a 4 hour ferry trip ahead. I was amazed at how flash the ferry was. I was imagining an old run-down ferry, chugging its way to the Islands, so I was definitely surprised to see an escalator in the ferry and rooms to store our luggage that is locked during the journey. There were cafes, restaurants, tables and chairs, reserved seating areas that were like aeroplane seats and outdoor seating areas. As we were all looking forward to the sun and view of the islands, we sat outside – we were in the shade for most of the journey and got to enjoy the view of the Islands going past. We stopped at a few of the Islands that we were going to be visiting in the second week of our trip, so that was fun to get a sneak preview of the Islands. The water was a beautiful deep blue and very calm. When the boat stopped and the propellers stirred up the water, the water was an iridescent light whitish aqua colour.
When we arrived at Syros, we had a short bus journey to our little seaside town of Possidonia and our brand new 4* Hotel. The Hotel was incredible – it was brand new (some bits still being completed), had a pool, sun lounges, flash restaurant and poolside drink service, the reception desk had a long fish tank across the front, the decor was a crisp white and the rooms had never been used before. This was luxury and I spent the afternoon at the pool.
